What is a Physician Assistant?

Certified Physician Assistants (PA-C) are medical providers who are formally trained in primary care medicine with additional training in various medical subspecialties. There are over 100 accredited academic training programs in the United States for Physician Assistants.

Typical backgrounds of Physician Assistant students include medical technicians, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, nurses, etc.

Most Physician Assistant programs are 24-27 continuous months in duration and use the medical school model. To remain nationally certified, Physician Assistants must complete 100 hours of continuing medical education (CME) biyearly and pass a national recertification exam every six years.

While just under half of the 30,000 physician assistants nationwide remain in primary care, the rest can be found in every medical and surgical specialty, including dermatology.

Additional Training?

In addition to formal clinical training during their two years of post-college education, they receive further specialty training apprenticing with supervising dermatologists.

Furtherance of their education is through required CME hours, attendance at national meetings, conferences, dermatology grand rounds, journals, online courses and review courses.

Role of a Physician Assistant

The responsibilities of a Physician Assistant include but are not limited to: diagnosis and management of acute and chronic skin disorders, prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting lab test, blood drawing and screening emergency calls. In addition, they can perform suture removal, biopsies, wound suturing, laser surgery, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, mole mapping and medical or surgical treatment of a wide variety of clinical pathology.
